SUMMARY:Lifesaving Society's Ice Safety Day
DESCRIPTION:Lifesaving Society Canada has declared March 1 as National Ice Safety Day. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of ice safety and the risks associated with ice-related activities. The Society encourages communities to share messages and resources to promote ice safety awareness. They emphasize the need for preparedness\, such as wearing lifejackets or float coats\, and the importance of checking ice thickness before venturing onto it. The Society also stresses the need for caution around unfamiliar paths or unknown ice and the need for a buddy when going on the ice. \nFor more information on how to be safe on or near ice\, click here.

SUMMARY:National Drowning Prevention Week
DESCRIPTION:Warm summer weather makes people across Manitoba think about staying cool. Year after year\, they flock to swimming pools or natural bodies of water across the province to get wet and beat the heat. Unfortunately\, that also means that every year we see a spike in drowning deaths. \nKnowing July sees the peak of water-related incidents each year\, the Lifesaving Society chooses the 3rd week of July as National Drowning Prevention Week (NDPW). This is a public awareness campaign each year to build community and media support for the drowning prevention cause. \nNational Drowning Prevention Week provides a focus around which community Water Smart® educators can plan news releases\, do television and radio interviews\, run public demonstrations\, deliver public training events\, and otherwise promote drowning prevention messages and events. Many successful community events are launched with a Mayor’s Proclamation of Drowning Prevention Week. \nLook for events in your local community.

SUMMARY:National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
DESCRIPTION:Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day take place on September 30. \nThe day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools\, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process. \nOrange Shirt Day is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day intended to raise awareness of the individual\, family and community inter-generational impacts of residential schools\, and to promote the concept of “Every Child Matters”.  The orange shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture\, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations. \nOn September 30\, we wear orange to honour the thousands of Survivors of residential schools.

SUMMARY:World Drowning Prevention Day
DESCRIPTION:World Drowning Prevention Day\, declared through the April 2021 UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/75/273 “Global drowning prevention”\, is held annually on 25 July. This global advocacy event serves as an opportunity to highlight the tragic and profound impact of drowning on families and communities and offer life-saving solutions to prevent it. \nAn estimated 236\,000 people drown every year\, and drowning is among the ten leading causes of death for children aged 5-14 years. More than 90% of drowning deaths occur in rivers\, lakes\, wells\, domestic water storage vessels and swimming pools in low- and middle-income countries\, with children and adolescents in rural areas disproportionately affected.
