Job Posting – Safety Management Officer
The Safety Management Officer oversees all aspects of safety management activities on behalf of Lifesaving Society Manitoba. This includes planning, organizing, leading, and contracting safety experts.
Reports To: Executive Director.
Hours of work
- 34 per/week, Monday – Friday
- some evenings and weekends required
- some supervision of term staff after hours required
- permanent, full-time position.
Duties and Responsibilities
KEY ROLE
Safety Management
- Provide and oversee Safety Management Services to the Lifesaving Society Manitoba and Affiliates in Manitoba. Duties include:
- Reviewing and providing recommendations on new pool construction when requested
- Providing guidance on interpretation of the Public Health Act and Lifesaving Society standards as required
- Conducting facility safety inspections and comprehensive safety audits and other operational audits and reviews for existing pools and waterfronts when requested, OR
- Contracting qualified safety inspectors to execute above duties on behalf of the organization
- Managing development of safety reports to facilities
- Providing and overseeing safety management training courses to affiliates and the public (Aquatic Supervisor, Aquatic Manager, SEE Auditor, etc.)
With Water Smart Manager, review annual drowning reports and identify important areas of focus - Liaise with Public Health Branch, Manitoba Health (Public Health Inspectors)
- Provide recommendations to Public Health Branch, Manitoba Health (Public Health Inspectors) on drowning prevention/water safety and regulatory issues.
- Serve as member or liaise with member for Manitoba on the National Safety Standards Commission and disseminate information as required.
SUPPORTING ROLE
As a member of the Lifesaving Society Manitoba team, the Safety Management Officer will collaborate with other staff as follows:
Programs
- Liaise with Program Coordinator on matters pertaining to safety management to support affiliates as needed
Media Relations & Public Education
- Ensure public messages meet safety standards and brief other staff as required in advance of media engagements.
- Speak to media on behalf of the organization when required
- Assist with the preparation and promotion for National Drowning Prevention Week (NDPW) and World Drowning Prevention Day (WDPD) as required.
Qualifications
Education
University degree in a related field, such as recreation management/kinesiology, social sciences, business or equivalent experience.
Certifications
Required Qualifications: National Lifeguard Instructor/Examiner, Lifesaving Instructor, Lifesaving Examiner, National Lifeguard Pool, First Aid Instructor, Standard First Aid & CPR-C, Aquatic Supervisor
Asset Qualifications: Swim for Life Instructor, Pleasure Craft Operator Card, National Lifeguard Waterfront, Swim for Life Trainer, Lifesaving Trainer, First Aid Trainer, Aquatic Manager
Some training may be available for the right candidate.

Experience
Five years’ experience in the aquatics field and business development
Working conditions
- Safety Management Officer usually works in an office environment, but the organization’s mission may sometimes take them to non-standard workplaces.
- Safety Management Officer works a standard work week but may be required to work evenings and weekends to carry out the duties as required.
Compensation
Compensation range: $50,000-$60,000
Vacation: as per the HR Policy and Procedures Manual
Overtime: there is no financial compensation for overtime, however banked time will be taken in lieu of overtime
