Job Posting – Water Smart Coordinator – Term Position
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Water Smart Coordinator oversees the Northern Water Smart program, including planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling program activities. The successful candidate will also coordinate, develop and oversee distribution of public education materials to the community, manage and attend events, engage with stakeholders and develop partnerships to promote water safety education. The coordinator will participate in speaking to the media about water safety as required.
Primary duties and responsibilities:
Northern Water Smart Planning and Implementation
- Coordinate the delivery of the program and its activities
- Maintain the annual program budget, ensuring program is delivered within approved budget parameters (in collaboration with Executive Director)
- Develop and maintain documentation of program activities
- Complete final program report for management and funders
- Liaise with program funders as required
- Manage participant records in accordance with the confidentiality/privacy policy of the organization
- Communicate with clients and stakeholders to gain community support and feedback
- Ensure program activities operate within organizational policies and procedures and comply with all relevant legislation and professional standards.
Northern Water Smart Team Leadership
- Participate in recruitment and selection of program staff
- Manage staff orientation in accordance with organizational standards
- Maintain confidential personnel files (in collaboration with the Executive Director)
- Engage volunteers for appropriate program activities.
- Supervise program staff, providing direction, input, and feedback.
- Liaise with other organization staff as required.
Newcomer Outreach
- Coordinate presentations for newcomer language classes on water and ice safety
- Liaise with newcomer agencies as required
- Seek out opportunities for further training and education
- Report on outcomes to Executive Director and funders as required
Public Education
- Review annual drowning reports for key themes/messages
- Develop, implement, and disseminate information for key public messages
- Coordinate and organize public education events and outreach
- Assist with the preparation and promotion for National Drowning Prevention Week (NDPW) and World Drowning Prevention Day (WDPD)
- Prepare and produce public education materials (brochures, posters, social media graphics, etc.)
Media Relations
- Act as media spokesperson for the Society as required
- Liaise with Media Coordinator to develop key messages
- With the Media Coordinator, brief staff and board members (when appropriate) on key public messages.
Hours of work
Hours of work: 34 per/week, Monday – Friday with occasional evenings and weekends with the flexibility to manage term staff after hours as required. This position is a full-time, 10-month term position.
Start date: March 3, 2025
Skill Requirements
Education
University degree in a related field, such as recreation management/kinesiology, social sciences, education, project management or equivalent experience.
Certifications
Required: Swim for Life Instructor, Lifesaving Instructor, Lifesaving Examiner, National Lifeguard Pool, First Aid Instructor, Standard First Aid & CPR-C, Aquatic Supervisor
Assets: Pleasure Craft Operator Card, National Lifeguard Waterfront, Swim for Life Trainer, Lifesaving Trainer, National Lifeguard Instructor/Examiner, First Aid Trainer, National Lifeguard Trainer, Aquatic Manager
Skills and Competencies
- Experience in program management
- Knowledge of client groups and issues related to programs and communities served by Lifesaving Society Manitoba
- Proficient computer skills including:
- Word processing
- Use of databases and spreadsheets
- Use of email and shared calendar interfaces
- Knowledge of HTML would be an asset
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting
- Ability to supervise a team
- Effective planning and problem solving
- Ability to maintain positive internal and external relationships
- Commitment to ethical standards and practices consistent with organizational values
Experience
Five years’ experience in the aquatics field or equivalent experience.
Assets
Previous experience collaborating with diverse communities, including indigenous communities and newcomers to Canada. Experience working and connecting with individuals experiencing economic inequalities is also an asset.
Working conditions
- Primarily an office environment
- Activities may take place in non-standard workplaces
- Standard work week with some evenings and weekends required.
Compensation
Compensation range: $50,000-$60,000
