Job Posting – Northern Water Smart Instructor

As a Northern Water Smart® Instructor, you will deliver Water Smart® Public Education programs, Swim to Survive™ lessons, first aid, and boating safety courses in rural and remote communities across Manitoba. You will travel and experience Manitoba as few others have and will work with various cultures and in unique conditions. Application deadline is March 14, 2025.

Time Commitment & Working Conditions

  • Up to 17-week term between May 5 and August 29, 2025
    • Work from our Winnipeg office and take part in day trips in May and June;
    • Required travel Monday to Friday during July and August to remote communities across Manitoba.
    • Some work will be conducted outdoors
  • A flex schedule may be possible, please indicate in your cover letter if you are looking for this work option.
  • Work may involve irregular hours, including weekends and holidays.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver Water Smart® initiatives, including EAL safety presentations, Farm Safety Days, and other public education events;
  • Travelling to rural and remote locations in Manitoba, including many Indigenous communities, to teach Lifesaving Society programs, including Swim to Survive™, Boat Operator Accredited Training™, and First Aid & CPR;
  • Submitting weekly reports and administrative paperwork to the Water Smart® Coordinator.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • 18 years of age by start of employment;
  • Valid Class 5 (Full) Manitoba driver’s license (or equivalent);
  • National Lifeguard and Standard First Aid & CPR-C certifications;
  • Lifesaving Society – Swim for Life® Instructor and Lifesaving Instructor;
  • Experience as a swimming/lifesaving instructor;
  • Ability and willingness to work with various cultures;
  • Ability and willingness to travel to rural and remote locations by air, boat, bus, car, or rail;
  • Criminal Record Check with Child Abuse/Vulnerable Persons Sector checks.

Asset Qualifications & Skills

  • Lifesaving Society – First Aid Instructor, National Lifeguard Instructor certifications & Trainer appointment (any stream);
  • Experience travelling to or living in rural or remote locations in Manitoba;
  • Experience working with diverse cultures and groups;
  • Fluency in a second language, especially a North American Indigenous language.

Training

  • Training may be available for candidates who do not hold all the required qualifications
    • Earn your Pleasure Craft Operator Card & become a Lifesaving Society B.O.A.T. Instructor;
    • Become a Lifesaving Society Occupational Aquatic Safety Training Instructor;
    • Recertify many of your certifications;

Compensation

  • Seasonal salary between $12,500 and $15,000
  • Coverage of job-related travel costs incurred in execution of duties
